Do you Know What’s Inside Your Toothpaste?
Brushing our teeth account for only 4 minutes of our day, yet have you ever stopped to question what your toothpaste is actually made of? Although we know that toothpaste is not supposed to be ingested, it is inevitably absorbed by our oral mucous membranes and ends up in our bloodstream. It is important to pay attention to the composition, but do you really know what is inside that white goo you put in your mouth 2x per day?
Toothpaste contains multiple abrasives and chemical substances that are supposed to help us eliminate bacteria in our mouths and remove food residues. For example, they contain sodium lauryl sulfate, an agent that can potentially trigger hypersensitivity to metal ions and alter the dental enamel. Many of our dental products contain triclosan, a toxic product used to make the hydroalcoholic gel, as explained in the photo below. Fluoride, also present in many kinds of toothpaste, has even been classified by the World Health Organization as one of the 10 most toxic substances if ingested regularly. In high doses, it can cause thyroid problems and even osteoporosis.
We can also point our fingers at titanium dioxide, which acts as a colorant and gives our toothpaste its white color. A survey conducted by Agir pour L’environnement reveals that 2⁄3 of the tubes of toothpaste sold are composed of titanium dioxide. Yet, absorbed regularly, it is a carcinogenic substance that can alter our organism. Although it has been banned in food products in France since January 1, 2020, this measure does not concern cosmetics ( including toothpaste) and medicines.
